OpenKM: AJAX Document Management System Launched

Free Software Based Project Aimed At Creating A Knowledge System Management For SME's

OpenKM, an AJAX document management system has been created by Paco Avila and his team to facilitate the knowledge management that will use Free Software standards and technologies. This system allows meeting the SME’s needs and characteristics concerning the knowledge management problematic, by solving difficulties that have the SME when implementing this kind of systems within their organizations.

The project is based on Free Software and all the tools and results raised from the project will be at the general public’s disposal, with use rights free of charge. The new documents management system that makes easier the Knowledge Management is based on J2EE technology and the JBoss application server. Therefore the OpenKM can be installed and executed in various platforms.

The OpenKM architecture is based on the following technologies: JBoss 4.0.3SP1 ( version basis for the development ) , Java J2EE ( JDK 1,5 ) Jackrabbit , GWT ( Google Web Toolkit - AJAX)

Due to its architecture, OpenKM can work on any operating system Unix, Linux, Windows. Because of its architecture AJAX + JBoss + Java J2EE there is hardly a load made by the application on the IT system. Therefore any conventional computer can be used in order to satisfactorily execute the application.

The functionalities include:

* User interface based on AJAX (GWT) that emulates the behaviour of a conventional interface.
* Knowledge management / Document management. Management and storage of documents and contents that are generated within the companies.
* Text document indexing, Office, OpenOffice, pdf, Databases, etc. The search engine indexes the before-mentioned document types; in order them to be able to make concrete searches on the contents kept in the system later on.
* GroupWare. Working tool shared between all the users. Several users can work at the same time with the company resources.
* Remote access to the client (Web client). The OpenKM allows accessing the companies’ resources as an extranet.
* Optional operation in ASP mode of remote management and collective use (it allows to manage several companies or workspaces simultaneously).
